Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni commands 99.4% trader consensus as Benin's next president following the April 12 presidential election, driven by outgoing President Patrice Talon's endorsement, his decade-long oversight of robust economic growth, and the ruling party's total control of the National Assembly after opposition's zero-seat sweep in January parliamentary elections. Only Paul Hounkpè qualified as a challenger amid restrictive candidacy rules that sidelined broader opposition. Polls closed peacefully yesterday with vote counting underway, despite jihadist threats in the north. Scenarios to upend this include verified irregularities sparking court challenges, recounts, or disputes, though institutional dominance and precedent suggest rapid confirmation.
