Heightened threats from Yemen's Houthis to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—a critical chokepoint for roughly 12% of global seaborne oil trade—amid the 2026 Iran conflict and renewed strikes on Israel since late March have sustained trader caution, yet market-implied odds reflect low near-term closure consensus. IMF PortWatch data shows 7-day average transit calls at 30-50 vessels, well above the effective closure threshold of ≤10, bolstered by multinational naval patrols enabling ~57 recent daily transits versus historical norms. Ongoing disruptions fuel Brent crude's climb to $103/bbl with a regional risk premium, while Cape of Good Hope rerouting has lifted container freight rates over 150% from 2023 baselines, squeezing margins and supply chains. Watch for Houthi escalations or US strikes as pivotal swing factors.
